When a pipe breaks, the first job is to stop the water. The next job is to remove what escaped and start drying the materials it reached. The first 24–48 hours matter because drywall paper, wood, insulation and dust can hold enough moisture for microbial growth to begin.
That does not mean every wet wall becomes a mold project. Fast extraction, airflow and dehumidification can prevent a water loss from turning into one. Waiting until the room smells musty makes the work larger and more disruptive.

Leaks hide in ordinary places
A slab leak may show up as warm flooring, a higher water bill or a damp baseboard far from a fixture. San Antonio’s slab foundations can let water travel under finishes before anyone sees a puddle.
An air-conditioner condensate line can drip inside a closet or overflow a pan in the attic. Because the system runs constantly through humid summers, the area may stay damp. Roof flashing can admit rain that wets attic insulation and decking without staining the ceiling immediately.
Supply-line drips under sinks, behind refrigerators and at washing-machine boxes are quieter. They wet the same small area every day. By the time cabinet wood swells or paint blisters, the back side may have been damp for weeks.
Dry to the inside, not the touch
A fan pointed at a wall can dry the paint while the cavity behind it remains wet. Vinyl flooring, cabinets and baseboards can trap moisture. Insulation holds water against studs. Hardwood can cup while the subfloor stays damp underneath.
We use moisture readings to map the affected area. When needed, we remove a baseboard, make a controlled opening or lift damaged material so air can reach the wet cavity. Commercial dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air while air movers help evaporation.

Know when it becomes remediation
If materials remained wet, a musty odor develops or suspected growth is visible, the project may need a mold inspection. Drying equipment does not remove existing contamination, and demolition without containment can spread debris.

The most useful call is the early one. If a condensate line, roof detail or supply tube has wet a wall, shut off the source if you can do so safely. Move belongings away. Then let a restoration professional check how far the moisture traveled before the surface convinces you everything is dry.
While help is on the way, do not run household fans across an area with suspected growth. Do not enter a room with a sagging wet ceiling. If water reached outlets or equipment, leave the power decision to a qualified professional. Personal safety comes before saving a baseboard.
Once drying starts, ask what is being measured and where. A good drying record follows affected materials over time. Equipment should stay because readings show it is needed, not because the calendar says every loss takes the same number of days.
Hard water can leave mineral marks around valves and fittings, so not every white deposit means an active leak. Wipe the area dry and check it again while the fixture runs. Fresh moisture, a moving meter or repeated dampness calls for repair and a cavity check.
